How to Grow English Lavender in Your Canadian Garden

English Lavender is a hardy and fragrant shrub that adds beauty and utility to Canadian gardens. Perfect for sunny, well-drained spots, it thrives from Zone 5 to 8 and can be grown from cuttings or division. Whether you want decorative foliage, fragrant flowers for sachets, teas, or baking, or a pollinator-friendly garden, this guide covers everything seniors need to grow, care for, and enjoy lavender successfully.

How to grow English Lavender:
Height, Culture and its Uses

English Lavender

English Lavender grows anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 feet.
However, I can only grow mine to about 2 1/2 feet.
I have tried other lavenders, but only English Lavender seems to be hardy enough for me in Zone 5.

Description:

A bushy shrub with small pointed silver-grey leaves with fragrant spikes of small lavender flowers.

Culture

Definitely full sun with well drained soil.
I tried to grow lavender in partial sun and it didn't do that well. Moved it to full sun and the plant doubled in size with a profusion of fragrant blooms.
Propagate by division or cuttings.
I have only been successful propagating my lavender by division in early spring.
English Lavender is hardy to zone 5-8.

Some Uses for English Lavender

I grow Lavender mostly for the grey foliage.
It can be used in Peau Pourri, teas, sachets and baking as well.
Lavender repels moths, grows well in rock gardens, makes attractive edgings and attract bees to the garden.
