Spring Inventory

Prep Checklist – Zones 2–4

Print this checklist and add it to your garden binder. Use it to get your tools, seeds, and supplies ready for a smooth start to the gardening season in cold climates. For crop timing, check your zone planting tables.

1️⃣ Tools

• Pruners, shears, scissors sharpened
• Hoes, trowels, spades cleaned
• Rakes checked and repaired
• Watering cans & hoses ready
• Soil thermometer calibrated

2️⃣ Seed Inventory

• Check leftover seeds for viability
• Make a list of staples to reorder (peas, spinach, radish, lettuce)
• Separate by indoor vs outdoor sowing
• Label all seed trays clearly

3️⃣ Supplies & Materials

• Seed trays, pots, or cells ready
• Grow lights & heat mats operational
• Row cover fabric, frost cloth, or floating row covers ready
• Mulch, compost, and soil amendments accessible
• Hoop house or greenhouse plastic checked for damage

4️⃣ Soil & Bed Prep

• Inspect raised beds for winter damage
• Remove debris from garden beds
• Check compost for readiness
• Test soil moisture and drainage
• Plan for first sowing according to zone tables

5️⃣ Frost / Risk Prep

• Confirm last expected frost date for your zone
• Keep row covers handy for late frost
• Note backup containers for early planting indoors
• Make a rough planting schedule based on zones
